Visual Field Trip To Albuquerque NM Balloon Fiesta

Balloon Fiesta 2015
Weather getting a bit dark and cloudy.

The balloon fiesta in Albuquerque began in 1972 in a shopping center parking lot with only 13 balloons. Background  As a kid we would just park anywhere and watch the balloons go up.  Very peaceful and usually no other cars around where we parked.  One of the reasons that Albuquerque is such a great place to fly a hot air balloon is because of "the box" which is predictable air patterns. Here the science behind it is explained  on YouTube just click on Albuquerque Box and KOAT ABQ Box

Three of Albuquerques most famous balloonists are Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman.  Amazon even has a book on their famous adventures in aviation. Double Eagle When I was in grade school they came and spoke to my 6th grade class.  Unfortunately Ben Abruzzo died at a young age in a plane crash, along with his wife, you can read the article here Chicago Tribune. Maxie Anderson died at even a younger age in a balloon crash, you can read here New York Times. Larry Newman has passed away too but here is a blog about him that is interesting Flying Blog

Below are pictures I took during the 2015 Balloon Fiesta.

This basket sure looks bigger on the ground!

When cars fly!  Who knew?

My favorite.

Is this bird trying to find a tree big enough for him to land in?

You can see the fire that powers the balloon.

Flying right by the highway.

This one plans to land right in a neighborhood.

Trying to find where their balloon is landing so they can pick it up.

Note the airplane in the photo.
